Writing Letters.

Today, I got my nephew’s, who’s in the Ohio National Guard, mailing address, at Basic Training. It got me to thinking that now that I am writing I should be writing letters to people, like my nephew. Now the terrible part is I will, most likely, type them. I hand write in my journal and of course that helps make it better but if I begin writing these letters, I want everyone to be able to read them. So, I will type them.

Now certainly, I will begin writing letters to my friends, nephews and my daughter but who I was really thinking of writing to were politicians and celebrities. Now I am not really talking about TV and Movie stars.  I like their work but most of them, no offense intended, but I am not all that concerned about conversing with them. Politicians that’s a no brainer my writing them will be to share my perspective on the current bills before them or the current crisis and how I think they should fix it, as if I really have clue. As for celebrity though, I am really talking about famous writers who’s work I enjoy. Not so much to pick their brains, as to just try and strike up a conversation in order to share my feelings about their work.

Now, I know that sounds a little arrogant. What makes me think they care how I feel about their work or that they might even want to strike up, even long distance, a relationship with me? You’re right and that’s why I am writing this. In more recent years, I have been taught a pretty valuable lesson about other people’s time. In person, I am quite a chatterbox. Really, ask my wife or any of my friends, they’ll tell you about it. Honestly, though the reason I am writing about this, is that I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Do you write to anyone that you admire, because you admire them? Do you think this is rude and intrusive or do you believe it is acceptable?

  1. Writing letters has become a lost art. It's something that has been suggested during the pandemic to help stay in contact in a more personal way. I just email politicians...a lot.

Hello From an Aspiring Writer

I know.  Many of us want to become a writer, a novelist, or a famous author and make tons of money, like Stephen King, James Patterson, Robert Jordan, Brad Meltzer and Jack Whyte, just to name a few. However,  I am 52 years old and I realize for every Stephen King or Brad Meltzer out there, there are thousands of writers struggling to get published, noticed, or even put food on the table.      Thanks to Stephen King's book, On Writing, and my own personal experiences writing. I know that it isn't easy.  It's something that takes a lot of time and work. I have done some writing over the years, including keeping a diary or journal.  Much of my more recent writing has been short articles for Masonic Lodge Education and some for Masonic blog publications.      It's not something that has been easy but honestly, since I was about 9 years old, I have loved to tell stories. Sometimes I even told stories ...
